Bu çalışmada, fen bilgisi öğretmen adaylarının gazlarla ilgili günlük hayattan örneklerin tartışıldığı bilimsel tartışmalara nasıl katıldıkları ve kimya bilgilerini bu örnekleri açıklarken nasıl kullandıkları incelenmektedir. Çalışmanın örneklemini, fen bilgisi öğretmenliği programı birinci sınıf öğrencileri oluşturmaktadır. Çalışmaya katılan öğretmen adaylarından, dörder kişilik altı grup oluşturulmuştur. Fen bilgisi öğretmen adayları, çalışma kağıtlarında bulunan 5 tane açık-uçlu soruyu grup içinde çalışarak cevaplamışlardır. Grupların yazılı cevapları ve grup tartışmaları çalışmanın verilerini oluşturmaktadır. Çalışmada farklı ölçüm araçları kullanılmıştır. Örneğin, (a) fen bilgisi öğretmen adaylarının yaptıkları bilimsel tartışmaların doğası önceden belirlenmiş kodlarla, (b) bu tartışmaların kalitesi içerdikleri çürütücülerin sayısıyla ve (c) fen bilgisi öğretmen adaylarının anlama düzeyleri açık-uçlu sorulara verdikleri cevaplarla belirlenmiştir. Yazılı cevaplarından aldıkları puanlara göre, gruplar yüksek başarılı ve düşük başarılı olarak sınıflandırılmıştır. Elde edilen sonuçlar, günlük hayat deneyimlerinin fen bilgisi öğretmen adaylarının açıklamalarında önemli bir rolü olduğunu ortaya çıkartmıştır. Fakat, fen bilgisi öğretmen adaylarının çoğu günlük hayattan edindikleri deneyimleri yanlış yorumlamaktadır. Neyse ki, başarılı gruplar, ortaya atılan yanlış iddiaları yüksek kalitede bilimsel tartışmalarda çözebilmiştir. Bu nedenle, fen bilgisi öğretmen adaylarının kimya kavramlarını günlük hayatla ilişkilendirmelerine yardım edebilmek için, onlara yüksek kalitede bilimsel tartışmaları nasıl yapabilecekleri öğretilmelidir. Bunun için fen sınıflarında fen bilgisi öğretmen adaylarının bilimsel tartışma yapmalarına olanak sağlayacak öğrenme ortamlarının dizayn edilmesi çok önemlidir.

This study aimed to investigate how pre-service science teachers engaged in argumentation about the daily life phenomena related to gases and how they use their chemistry background to explain these phenomena. The participants were first year pre-service science teachers. They were divided into 6 groups of four. All groups worked to complete writing frames, which contained five open-ended questions. Data were collected through writing frames and group discussions. Various measures were used to trace (a) the nature of pre-service teachers’ discourse using pre-determined codes, (b) the quality of pre-service teachers’ argumentation by counting the number of rebuttals and, (c) pre-service teachers’ understanding through their answers to open-ended questions. In terms of the performance in the written frames, groups were classified as higher performing and low performing. Results revealed that pre-service teachers’ prior knowledge from their daily life experiences was an important factor in their explanations, but many of them misinterpreted the daily life examples. Fortunately, high performing groups were able to resolve the inaccurate claims by engaging in higher-level argumentation. Therefore, to help pre-service science teachers to associate chemistry concepts with daily life, they should be taught how to argue effectively, and learning environments should be designed to promote pre-service science teacher argumentation in the science classrooms.
