Geleneksel panayırlar, emtia ve/veya hayvan panayırları olarak, daha çok ilçelerde ve belirli tarih aralıklarında, yılda bir ya da iki kez kurulan ticaret ve eğlence fonksiyonlarının birlikte sunulduğu alışveriş ortamlarıdır. Cumhuriyet dönemi içinde yaklaşık üçte ikisi ortadan kalkan panayırlar geçmişteki anlam ve önemini kaybetmiş olsa da, sosyoekonomik yaşamın sınırlı olduğu yörelerde ekonomiyi ve toplumsal yaşamı canlandırmayı sürdürmektedir. Türkiye’nin çeşitli yerleşmelerinde ikamet eden çok sayıda gezici esnaf da geçimlerini halen büyük ölçüde panayırlardan sağlamaktadır. Bu gezgin ticaretçiler arasında özellikle Romanlar öteden beri panayırların eğlence hizmetlerini üstlenmeleriyle dikkati çekerler. Burada ele alınan çalışmanın amacı, ‘Panayırcı Romanların’ kaynak (ikamet) sahalarını ve faaliyet gösterdikleri panayırları belirlemektir. Araştırma sürecinde belirlenen bu tür mekânsal bağlantılar Romanların panayır tercihleri üzerinde etkili olan faktörleri açıklamaya da yardımcı olmaktadır. Bulgular, özellikle son 30 yılda meydana gelen sosyoekonomik ve kültürel değişimler, eğlence anlayışının değişmesi vb. faktörlerin etkisiyle Romanların geçimlerini panayırlardan sağlamalarının giderek güçleştiğine de işaret etmektedir. Çalışma kapsamında değerlendirilen verilerin temeli Türkiye’nin dört coğrafi bölgesindeki 13 ilde dağılış gösteren örneklem panayırlarda gerçekleştirilen saha çalışmalarına dayanmaktadır.

Traditional fairs are shopping environments which are set up in the form of merchandise and/or animal fairs predominantly in districts and at specific time intervals once or twice a year and where the functions of trade and entertainment are offered together. Although the fairs, about two-thirds of which disappeared in the Republican period, have lost their previous significance and importance, they go on reviving the economy and the social life at the localities with a limited socio-economic life. A large number of mobile tradesmen who reside in various settlements of Turkey still make a living substantially from the fairs. Of these mobile trade people, Romanies in particular have been drawing attention by undertaking the entertainment services of the fairs for a long while. The purpose of the present study is to determine the places of origin (residence) of the ‘Panayırcı Romanlar” (Traditional Fair Romanies) and the fairs at which they operate. Such spatial connections, determined in the research process, also help elucidate the factors which are effective on the fair preferences of Romanies. The findings also indicate that it has gradually become difficult for Romanies to make a living from the fairs under the influence of such factors as especially the socio-economic and cultural changes in the last 30 years and the change in the understanding of entertainment. The data evaluated within the scope of the study are based on the fieldwork carried out at the sample fairs distributed in 13 provinces in the four geographical regions of Turkey.
