The planning and design of cities with public participation is crucial for sustainable development. Designers, local governments, users and non-governmental organizations have great responsibilities to work collaboratively to ensure sustainable development through design solutions. In this context, the study discusses the importance of studies based on interdisciplinary collaboration among design disciplines and other relevant actors to support long term sustainable development and better design solutions. In urban areas, the unsuccessful design solutions and lack of care of the built environment increase the sense of insecurity in those spaces and may prevent people from participating in public life by keeping them away from the streets. In this case, poorly designed public spaces not only limit people's access to opportunities, but also affect the livability and sustainable development of the city. In this study, examples of design and implementation from the world and Turkey, public participation and sustainability were examined in terms of design. The research brings new model and solution proposals that will lay the foundations of successful cooperation among disciplines. It also reveals that the applications made in Turkey regarding the subjects covered by the objectives of this research are very limited and superficial. Consequently, the study presents design proposals for product / system-oriented spatial development model, assessing the results of current trends and development as well as determining design problems and priorities at different scales.
