Man’yoshu (8th cent.) is the oldest extant Japanese poetry anthology. It is one of the important sources to reach the origins of the Japanese literature, culture and language. In the anthology there are 4516 poems dating back to Kofun (250- 592), Asuka (592-710), Nara (710-784) Periods. It contains poetry of onymous and anonymous poets. There are also a large number of poems of women poets from different social levels of Japanese society of these periods. In this paper, onymous women poets in the anthology has been analyzed and categorized. In this study, firstly it has been searched the women in society, in economy and in law and set forth their position in Man’yoshu Period. In the second chapter, onymous women poets in the anthology has been determined and categorized statistically through the data gathered in first chapter. In the third chapter, by omitting Kofun poets as there were only two of them and there were also ambiguity of dates of their poetry; poetry of onymous women poets from Asuka and Nara Period have been analyzed in terms of their poetic forms and categories. It has been set forth the changes in poetic forms and categories between these periods. Due to poetic forms and categories, it can be gathered valuable data on the reason of reciting the poetry and on the position of the woman who recites it. Choka poetic form and banka, zoka categories imply that the poetry is public and formal (koteki ??) while somon and hiyuka are private and informal (shiteki ??). The aim of this study is to set forth the changes of the women in Japanese poetry and in the social life, in Man’yoshu Period.
