Abstract:

Space, which is one of the efficient elements of the fiction texts, is day-by-day increasing its function and importance among the literary texts. Space is a kind of physical environment which aesthetically underpins the events in the narrative genre; however when the modern novel is considered, it rises to a position that reflects the social change, directs the historical and social events, affects the destiny of an individual and the formation of character by going beyond this limited function. The way, which is needed to reflect the individual and social adventure in an exact manner, depends on the success of space fiction with the inner and outer depictions. Major novelists in both the world and Turkish literature have highly benefited from the space when they have given an aspect of sociological structure to their works of art that examine society. Orhan Pamuk, one of the important representatives of this type, uses references related to the space in his novels. In his novel The Black Book, “Istanbul” is regarded as the hero of the novel. In his novel Snow, the concept of social tragedy such as the suicides of the teen girls and women in Kars city is viewed with the social environment that surrounds individual. In The Museum of Innocence, Istanbul faces the readers as a commemorative city, which has intensive symbolic provision in the memory of protagonist. The themes such as immigration, inequality in income distribution, clash among the social classes, unplanned construction and life struggle of the culturally shocked individual in city are viewed via particular spaces, environments and structures in A sense of Strangeness in My Mind, which is the core of this study.
