Abstract:

The aim of this research; the city plans that guide the process of spatial and functional development of the city of Gaziantep are basically analyzed according to the historical background. These discussions are carried out in the context of Gaziantep's "breakpoints" and "dynamics of development" within the process of urbanization and urban development. In the study; a method based on comparative evaluation of the visual sources of the physical development and change process of the city of Gaziantep in detail in the spatial dimension and the visual materials composed of the maps, the development plans and the explanatory reports were followed. The findings indicate that Gaziantep city structure evolved into a model of industrial city transition with its comprehensive and holistic first planning experience, which started in 1938. The main theme of the plans in the 1950s is the search for solutions to the problem of housing in the increasing urban population, in line with the socio-economic and political developments of the country. With the 1970s, the growing share of industrial areas in urban land use is quite remarkable. This experience, which reflects the industrial city model, continues with the vision of reaching the metropolitan model with the 1980s. The most important approach of the planning studies carried out in this period is that it predicts that the single-centered city structure will be transformed into a multi-centered structure. Today, the spatial development of the city of Gaziantep is mostly directed to urban transformation and development projects. It is very important that this process, which provides important opportunities for more sustainable urban development, be carried out in a holistic manner.
