Abstract enNowadays, new approaches, in which, “places” becoming less and less important and personal experiences & social relations detached from their immediate contexts, that are being formed through information & communication technologies emerge day by day. Modernity’s “creation of no-places”, “being devoid of any notion of place” and “production of unauthentic places” with a claim of universality, is opposed by Post-Modernity with notions such as “mass democracy” and “expression of differences with an emphasis on not only public but also biological” creating a new vantage point and bringing the issue of “place” suniquenessin to focus. Therefore, with the accumulation of different planning ideologies and their constructed traces belonging to different eras, cities’ transformation can be read as a fragmented done. In this study, İzmit’s transformation as a coastal city until 1960’s and its subsequent shift of identity to an inland city in the 2000s is discussed with an emphasis of it sinteraction with the notion of “urban identity”
