One of the authors in our literature that wrote fiction from a socialist-realist perspective is Burhan Günel. Günel broadly reflected his socialist realist orientation into his short stories and narrated the life stories especially of the people from the lower segments of the society with accounts based on solid observations. In his narrative, he made frequent use of portraiture. One phenomenon narrated by the author for depicting social conditions is the reality of “slums”. In the first chapter of this analysis, the socialist realist perspective of Günel and in the logical framework of the second chapter, the phenomenon of “slums” were focused on. In the third chapter of this study, the author’s approach towards the reality of slums in his short stories was discussed. In the fourth chapter, citations about life in slums were included from some of Günel’s short stories, where the setting is Ankara, the city in which he spent a significant part of his life.
