Abstract:

Ports have an important role in the development of the cities in which they are. Given their economic contributions, ports appear to be a value at a local, national and even international scale. In addition to increasing employment capabilities in the region, they also ensure the development of infrastructure capabilities such as ports, rail and road infrastructures, organized industries and free areas, container terminals and the establishment of customs entropolis. Ports, such as any enterprise that operates with limited economic possibilities and presents optimal outcomes, are also vital. In cases of activity measurement often used and multiple input-multi-output, the Data Coverage Analysis (VZA), which gives strong results in activity measurement between similar decision-making units (KVBs), determines their activities by giving each input and output a separate weight, and also provides the necessary recommendations to be effective with reference sets. In the study, measurements of the effectiveness of the existing port operations in Turkey have been made and recommended necessary improvements in order to be able to develop economically. ABSTRACT: Ports, has an important role in the development of their respective cities.  Regarding the economic contributions, it is obvious that ports are considered to be of local, national, even international assets. Besides their role in increasing employment opportunities in the region, they also ensure development in railway and highway infastructures, they provide growth in industrial zones and free zones, bonded warehouses and container terminals. Like every establishment that operates with limited resources and which gives the most optimal outputs with existing inputs, ports operations are vital as well. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) which is frequently used in efficiency measurement and gives the most reliable result with multiple input-multiple output situations and similar Decision Making Units (DMUs), determines each input and output seperately to appropriate recommendations with reference groups in order to be more effective. In this study, current port management activities in Turkey are evaluated and the necessary improvements and suggestions were made that will develop their economy.
