Ahmed Midhat Efendi and Gaspıralı İsmail Bey are two important men of letters and intellectuals, one of whom lived in the Ottoman Empire and the other in the Russian Empire. These two writers were significant figures of their era not only because of their literary works but also because of their journalism. This article discusses the press censorship in the Ottoman and Russian Empires in the nineteenth century through the reactions of Ahmed Midhat Efendi and Gaspıralı İsmail Bey. In this regard, the press censorship in both empires is firstly outlined, and the leadership of these two writers to ordinary people and intellectuals in taking the pulse of the Muslims in the Ottoman and Russian Empires in their publications is pointed. After that, the writers’ statements about each other, their views on Ottoman and Russian societies, and their relationships with intellectual class are mentioned. The role of the newspapers of Ahmed Midhat Efendi and Gaspıralı İsmail Bey, who tried to avoid from press censorship, is discussed, and it is shown that these newspapers played a critical role in political and social life. Consequently, it is claimed that Ahmed Midhat Efendi and Gaspıralı İsmail Bey took responsibility of directing the internal dynamics of their respective societies with their preferences as writers, had an important position in the connection of the political elites with the society, and had to undertake the role of ambassador of the state power with the ordinary people and intellectuals in terms of conveying the political and social circumstances.
