Abstract:

The aim of this research is to determine the attitudes and tendencies of students who receive Individual Instrument-Guitar training in music education departments towards memorizing guitar pieces and to evaluate them within the scope of the research. The research is a case study conducted in a qualitative framework. The study group of the research consists of students who took Individual Instrument-Guitar and Individual Instrument Education-Guitar lessons in the spring semester of the 2020-2021 academic year in Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University, Faculty of Education, Department of Fine Arts Education, Department of Music Education, and who participated the lessons. In the research, a semi-structured interview form created by the researchers was used in order to obtain in-depth information about the dimensions covered in the research to determine the attitudes and tendencies of the students towards memorizing guitar pieces. The data of the research were analyzed by content analysis method. In this context, the themes and sub-themes that will seek answers to the research questions were determined in line with the conceptual framework of the research and the data obtained from the interviews. As a result of the research, it was determined that the students mostly tend to play their works by heart in concerts and exams, and they mostly prefer the auditory (learning by ear) method within the scope of the methods they follow while memorizing guitar pieces. In the results obtained regarding the strategies used by the students while memorizing the guitar pieces; It was determined that they benefited from implicit and explicit repetition, mental repetition and partially organizing strategies. In addition to these, while some of the students have a positive attitude towards playing guitar pieces by heart; It has been determined that some of them have negative attitudes such as anxiety, excitement and fear towards playing guitar pieces by heart.
