Müntecebüddin el-Hemedânî hicri 700 yıllarında yaşamış kendi asrının önde gelen müfessirlerinden biridir. Müellif Kahire ve Dımeşk’te uzun yıllar tedrisat faaliyetlerinde bulunmuş, tedrisat faaliyetleri yürüttüğü medreselerde Kur’ân’ı dil bilimsel olarak ele aldığı çalışmalarının yanında kıraat ile de ilgilenmiş, tefsir ve kıraat alanında temayüz etmiştir. Müellifin bilinen tarihiyle ilgili bilgiler sadece tedrisat faaliyetleri ile ilgili bilgilerdir. Kaynaklarda müellif’in h. 598 yılında Kahire’de öğrenim gördüğü belirtildiğine göre doğumuyla ilgili yaklaşık bir tarih verilirse h. 575 ve sonraki yıllarda doğduğunu söylemek mümkündür.
El-Hemedânî kendi döneminin önemli âlimlerinden biri olup dönemin ilim merkezleri olan Kahire ve Dımeşk’te tedrisat faaliyetleri yürütmüş, daha çok te’lif ettiği el-Ferîd adlı tefsirle anılsa da şeyhü’l-kurrâ olarak da anılmıştır. Mütevazî bir kişiliğe sahip olan el-Hemedânî ayrıca araştırmacı ve tenkitçi bir yeteneğe de sahip olup kıraat, sarf, nahiv ve belagat gibi birçok ilim alanında yetkin bir âlimdir.
