Abstract:

ABSTRACT In this study, it is aimed to understand the changing nature of maps and cartography as a media tool together with digital methods and to examine the activities of platforms that encourage the participation of users. It has been problematized how the users participate in digital mapping activities as an important component. In this context, commercial Google Maps and crowdsourced OpenStreetMap platforms are comparatively examined. Mapping For Change and Yer Çizenler: Herkes İçin Haritacılık Derneği (Landmarkers: Cartography Association for All) from Turkey which use crowdsourced map interfaces protects the participation of the community and the public interest have been analyzed descriptively in terms of the problem of the study. Users are positioned as content producers who work for free on Google Maps, which are mediated by commercial networks, and as 'potential customers' as part of their surveillance processes. In crowdsourced platforms, on the other hand, it has been observed that volunteer users work for free, but mostly take part in mapping activities for the public benefit. However, this participation activity is still limited to a certain social group. It is seen that community maps, which have strong potentials of participation in the public sphere, need to be developed in a more comprehensive way of access and use throughout society.
