Abstract:

In the research, it was aimed to examine the alternative ideas of secondary school students about the measurement of force and friction unit. Survey method was used in the research. The study was carried out with 140 students studying in the 5th grade of secondary school in the 2020-2021 academic year. The data in the research were obtained by using an achievement test consisting of 30 multiple choice questions. The obtained data were analyzed descriptive analysis technique and using the analysis technique developed by Bao (1999). The answers given by the students for each question were analyzed separately and the frequency and percentage values were interpreted using the tables. Concentration scores and concentration factors were calculated for each question based on these values. Thanks to the analysis, the deficiencies of the students were determined based on the questions they made wrong. As a result of the research, alternative ideas of students about the direction of friction force and associating friction force with daily life were determined. Teachers were suggested to create lesson designs that would enable them to relate learning outcomes more to daily life in order to overcome the deficiencies of their students in the subject of friction force. In addition, in order to obtain the best results from these analyzes, suggestions were given to the researchers about data collection tools.
