Abstract:

Indirect Translation is that a previously translated text acts as a source text for retranslation into another target language, in short it is a translation of the translation. Indirect Translation has an important place both in ensuring literary communication between distant languages and cultures and in the acceptance of world classics. In addition, if the source text cannot be accessed or the source text is damaged, this type of translation is used. However, in terms of losses that may occur in translation, indirect Translation carries a double risk compared to direct translation, so it has a negative connotation. In this study, Kafka’s story Ein Landarzt has been analyzed comparatively in the context of indirect Translation with practical examples. The Turkish translation of the story, which appears to have been made by Mehmet Harmancı using an intermediary language, English translation by Willa and Muir and direct translation by Kamuran Sipal were analyzed in the light of descriptive translation studies.The review focused on the effect of the indirect translation rather than finding translation errors. At this point, it has been questioned whether the different interpretations and utterances in the translations originate from the source text or from the translator’s decisions. In the analysis of the work, especially the “Descriptive Translation Studies” method developed by Gideon Toury and translation norms were utilized. However, by trying to follow a pluralistic approach, Eugene Albert Nida’s views on the concept of “equivalent effect” were also taken into account.
