Abstract:

Primary school first grade is a critical phase when individuals begin to acquire reading and writing skills. The reading skill acquired at this stage forms the basis for comprehension, which is the essence of reading. When the PISA results in recent years are examined, the level of our country in the field of reading skills highlights the importance that should be given to this field. Writing process, whose rules are learned and mechanically produced during the writing instruction process in the first grade, is very important for the general academic success. In this study, it was aimed to examine the mechanical writing and reading comprehension skills of primary school first grade students. In accordance with this purpose, it was determined whether the mechanical writing and reading comprehension skills of primary school first grade students differed in terms of gender variable. The research was designed by scanning model, one of the quantitative research methods. The study group of this research consisted of 479 primary school first grade students. In order to collect the data, the comprehension questions prepared as in-text and out-of-text for a narrative reading text prepared by taking the expert opinions, Mistake Analysis Inventory and Mechanical Writing Success Evaluation Form were used. In the data analysis process, the descriptive statistics were used to determine the mechanical writing and reading comprehension skills of the students and Mann Whitney-U test was used to determine whether these skills differed according to the gender variable. The findings of the study indicated that the mechanical writing skill differed significantly according to the gender variable and that this differentiation was in favor of female students. However, it was determined that the reading comprehension skill did not differ significantly according to the gender variable.
