İlk kez Dünya Bankası’nın bir raporunda (2007) kullanılan orta gelir tuzağı kavramı, bazı orta gelirli ülkelerin, büyümenin durağanlaşmasının bir sonucu olarak içine girdiği kısır döngü durumuna gönderme yapmaktadır. Bu durumun son yıllarda yaygınlık kazanması, orta gelir tuzağı kavramını akademi dünyasının ilgi odaklarından biri haline getirmiştir. Nitekim 2000’li yılların sonlarından itibaren bu alanda pek çok çalışma yapıldığını ve bir literatür oluştuğunu görüyoruz. Bu çalışmaların bir kısmı, orta gelir tuzağını, tek ülke deneyimi üzerinden tanımlamayı amaçlamaktadır. Diğer çalışmalar ise birden fazla ülkeyi birlikte ele alıp orta gelir tuzağına sebep olan makroekonomik değişkenlerin envanterini çıkarmaktadır. İster tek ülkeli olsun ister çok ülkeli olsun, bizim incelediğimiz çalışmaların tamamı, büyümenin durağanlaşması ile orta gelir tuzağı arasında bir nedensellik ilişkisi olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır. Bu nedenledir ki, söz konusu çalışmalar, öncelikle ülkenin büyüme performansını düşüren unsurların envanterini çıkarmaya yönelmektedir. Daha sonra büyüme performansını yükseltmek ve bu sayede orta gelir tuzağından kaçınmak için ülkenin yapması gerekenler sıralanmaktadır.
The concept of middle income trap, which was used in a report (2007) of the World Bank for the first time, refers to the situation that some middle income countries get into a vicious cycle as a result of stagnation of their economic growth rates. The spreading of this situation in recent years brings the concept of middle income trap into a main focus of interest of the academic world. Thus, we see that a lot of studies have neen made since the late 2000s and a literature has been formed. Some of these studies aims to describe the middle income trap through one country’s experience. The other studies evaluate more than one countries together and they perform an inventory of the macroeconomic variables that bring about the middle income trap. All of the studies which we have examined whether they are single-country or multi-country studies reveal that there is a causal relationship between stangation of economic growth and the middle income trap. For this reason, the examined studies primarily focus on making an inventory of the factors that degrade the growth performance of a country. Later on, things to do to upgrade economic performance of the countries and avoid the middle income trap have been ordered.
