Abstract:

This study aims to determine whether the Waldmann model used in text teaching has an impact on the development of students’ understanding of what they read and critical thinking skills. The study aimed at this, experimental pattern and the work group was formed in the 2010-2011 educational year of Sivas or Fevzi Pasha Primary School 8th grade students. Turkish courses were performed in the experimental group (N=30) with Waldmann model activities in the text teaching and control group (N=30) and in the traditional method text teaching. The experimental study lasted 11 weeks, including the weeks in which the pre-test and final tests were applied. The experiment and control group was applied to the "Test of Excellence" (CYT), "Cornell Critical Thinking Skills Test Level X" (CEDTD-X) and applied. The data obtained from these tests have been analyzed through the SPSS 16.00 statistical package program. T tests were used for dependent and independent groups in the analysis of data. In the study, the meaning level was considered 0.05. When compared the final test score and the final test score average of students in the experimental group, the students in the experimental group found that the understanding skills of students in the experimental group developed statistically significantly. Again, when compared the final test score average in the critical thinking skills of the students in the experiment group with the final test score average of the students in the control group, the students in the experiment group found that the critical thinking skills of the students in the experiment group developed significantly statistically.
