Objectives: The concept of geographical indications includes the signs, which give information about geographical features of goods or products. Along with the scientific developments that take place in the information age, the structure of the commercial activities of the goods or products in the globalizing world, and the marketing approaches are changing. In this direction, the concept of geographical indications, which has crucial manner in international business activities, has gained importance in Turkey. The aims of this study are to evaluate the improvements on geographical indications and to observe the yearly distribution of geographical indications registered and waiting to be registered in Turkey from Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement up to our day. In addition, this study is to provide a systematic approach to increase the functionality of the geographical indications registered in Turkey. Methods: The distribution of the numbers of the geographical indications registered and waiting to be registered provided from the web site of Turkish Patent Authority are handled according to years. While the schematic approach is presented in order to increase the functionality of the geographical indications such registered product as olive oil, etc. in Turkey, the attention is drawn to the usage of statistics and computer science fields whose importance is increasing during the information age. Results: As a result of this study, the concepts of geographical indications are scrutinised. The problems are encountered during the application process of geographical indications in Turkey, a methodology is summarized to increase the applicability of geographical indications.
