Since the mid-4th/10th. century Abbāsīds had been under the political and military domination of the Buwayhids, and the Great Seljuks respectively, for about two centuries. By the beginning of the 6th/12th century, Al-Mustarshid-Billāh and Rāshid- Billāh, unlike their predecessors, began to include the political prevalence of Iraq and attempted to remove the Seljuk infiltration of Bagdad, but these attempts utterly failed. The death of Mas‘ūd, Sultan of the Seljuks of Iraq, however, gave a rise to a new beginning in the Abbāsīd-Seljuk relations. Al-Muktafī with the efforts of his Vizier Abu’l-Muzaffar Yahyā Ibn Hubayra provided the Abbāsīds after two centuries the opportunity to re-establish their authority in Iraq. The aim of this article is to analyse the life of Vizier Abu’l-Muzaffar Yahyā Ibn Hubayra. First, the article will introduce the reader to the earlier life of Ibn Hubayra before his vizierate. This will be followed by an evaluation and analysis of his appointment to the vizierate, his political and military activities and the events related to his death.
