This study has been prepared in order to make a terminological contribution to Turkish settlement geography literature by trying to examine the roots along with functional and physiognomic features of settlements named palanga in the Erzincan plain and settlements that have been built as palangas but names of which have changed and to put forth the differences and similarities between palangas and rural settlements. Palanga settlements in Erzincan plain are rural settlements built to raise animals. They are generally older than farm settlements based on sowing and planting activities. In contrast to the temporary feature of Kom and Ağıl settlements, palangas are permanent settlements. Even though they resemble farm settlements, there are distinct differences. They have been established to make use of swamp pasture-pasture lands in places where water table is high. Even though they have been established as a continuation of the economical activity field of a village, their population may increase in time and they may turn into villages. As the swap pasture – pastures turn into cultivation areas with drainage activities, the basic economical activity in palangas which is stockbreeding transforms into planting and sewing. Today, there are 2 villages named as palangas in the Erzincan plain, 2 villages named as farms, 2 settlements that are separate villages which were once settlements named as palanga and farm along with 4 palangas and one farm settlements.
