Bu çalışmanın amacı ulusal gazetelerde öğretmenlerin ve öğretmenlik mesleğinin nasıl temsil edildiğini ortaya çıkarmaktır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda örneklem için Türkiye’de ulusal düzeyde yayın yapan üç gazete (Hürriyet, Sabah ve Sözcü) araştırma kapsamına dahil edilmiştir. Örneklemin seçiminde gazetelerin tirajı, mülkiyet durumu ve siyasi duruşu dikkate alınmıştır. Araştırmanın yapılacağı sürece en yakın eğitim-öğretim dönemi olan 1 Eylül 2017 ile 31 Ocak 2018 tarihleri arasında öğretmenlerle ilgili çıkan metinler araştırma örneklemini oluşturmuştur. Haber metinleri PRNet dijital gazete arşivinden elde edilmiş ve metinlerin doğru bir şekilde taranabilmesi için “öğretmen” kelimesi anahtar kelime olarak seçilmiştir. Ulaşılan veriler üzerinde çalışılarak öğretmenlerle ilgili iyimser düşünceler oluşturabilecek haberler olumlu kötümser düşünceler oluşturabilecek haberler olumsuz herhangi bir duygu ve düşünceye yol açmayacak haberler ise dengeli olarak kategorilere ayrılmıştır. Bu kategorilerin altında ise temalar ve konular bulunmaktadır. Örneklemdeki üç gazetede de öğretmenlerle ilgili okuyucunun dikkatini çekebilecek farklı konulardaki haberlere yer verildiği görülmektedir. Olumlu haberlerin sunulmasında gazeteler arasında önemli bir fark bulunmamakta ve öğretmenlerin olumlu etkinlik ve eylemleri haberleştirilmektedir. Sözcü ve kısmen de Hürriyet gazeteleri siyasi iktidarı eleştirebilecek olumsuz haberlere daha fazla yer vermektedir. Bazı olumsuz haberlerin sunumunda kullanılan dil ve üslup tüm gazetelerde kışkırtıcı, genelleyici ve olumsuz algıyı derinleştirici yöndedir. Bu da öğretmenlerin imajını zedeleyebilecek niteliktedir.
The aim of this study is to reveal how teachers and teaching professions are represented in national newspapers. Three newspapers (Hürriyet, Sabah and Sözcü) published nationally in Turkey for sampling have been included in the research scope. The selection of the example took into account the printing of the newspapers, the status of property and the political position. Textes relating to teachers from 1 September 2017 to 31 January 2018, which is the nearest educational-learning period as the study will be conducted, have formed the research sample. News texts are obtained from the PRNet digital newspaper archive and the word "leader" has been chosen as the keyword so that the texts can be scaned correctly. The news that can create optimistic thoughts about teachers by working on obvious data is positive; the news that can create pessimistic thoughts is negative; the news that will not lead to any feelings and thoughts is balancedly divided into categories. Under these categories there are topics and subjects. Three newspapers in the examples also show news on different topics that can attract the attention of the reader about teachers. There is no significant difference in the presentation of positive news between the newspapers and the positive activities and actions of the teachers are communicated. The spokesman and partially the Hürriyet newspapers are giving more place to negative news that can criticize political power. The language and style used in the presentation of some negative news are provocative, generalizing and deepening the perception of negative in all newspapers. This is the way that teachers can see the image.
The study seeks to unveil how Turkish nationwide newspapers represent teachers and the teaching profession. By this means, three Turkish national dailies (Hürriyet, Sabah and Sözcü) were included in the research sample. The sample was decided according to the criteria of circulation numbers, ownership and political stance. The period between 1 September 2017 and 31 January 2018 was the nearest school term to the time of conducting the analysis. Therefore, the news items published throughout that term were included in the study. The news items were gathered from the PRNet digital news archive and the keyword “öğretmen” (“teacher”) was chosen in order to reach the most appropriate text material. During the analysis, the news items that can create sympathetic ideas about teachers were coded as positive. News content with a pessimistic tone was categorized as negative coverage. Furthermore, the items that do not have the capacity to create any emotions or thoughts were coded as neutral. Under these categories, there are themes and topics. The newspapers of the research sample include different kinds of news items that can receive attention from readers. It was found out in the analysis that there is no meaningful difference among newspapers on the representation of positive news items. Most positive items tend to cover some useful activities and actions that are run by teachers. Sözcü, and in some cases Hürriyet, published more negative covered reports. These items often refer to some critique targeting political power. Some negative reports have an offensive language and generalizing tone. This kind of style empowers the negative perception of the coverage. Inevitably, this kind of content harms the image of teachers in society.
