Although five centuries passed since the Ottoman’s Chāldirān victory (1514), the consequences of this battle are still a disputed issue. While Ottoman chronicles present the result of this battle as a decisive victory, Safavid sources refrain from announcing it as a defeat. Safavid sources interpret it as a tactical withdrawal on their part, and attempt to justify their claims though various explanations. Based on Safavid chronicles, which have been neglected by modern historiography, this article aims to discuss the perception and interpretation of the Battle of Chāldirān by the contemporary Safavid chronics. The appraisal of both Ottoman and Safavid sources will enable a better understanding of the issue.
