Abstract:

In the experience of Turkish modernization, the press and broadcasting have taken an important role and have a founding benefit. The different sections of the world of thought have communicated their ideas to the public through newspapers and magazines, and the concepts such as country, nation, nationality in the modern sense have been introduced to the public with these elements. After the proclamation of the Republic, the Presidency of Dianet Affairs, which was established with the aim of disseminating religious affairs, began to rejoice the Dianet Gazette in 1968. In addition to religious matters, the Dianet Gazette, which is trying to judge the general culture of the people, has shown a position that supports the government’s policy as well as the state’s policy. One of the important examples of this position can be seen in the publication activities of the newspaper during the 1974 Cyprus Peace Movement. Though various treaties and systems have been tested on the Cyprus Island, which is of great importance for Turkey, the peace and order have not been achieved and the military elements supported by Greece have carried out a military coup to the island's legitimate administration, Turkey has organized a move on the island on July 20, 1974, in accordance with the right of guarantee arising from international treaties. According to the State support mission, the Dianet Gazette has given place to the Cyprus Peace Movement, before the movement, the moment of the movement and after it, and has revealed a spoken statement to the state. As a result, the Presidency of the Dianet Affairs through the Dianet Gazetesi has implemented the draft that the religion and politics in the Turkish thought tradition are brothers, and that the state’s religious protection and glorification religion is responsible for supporting it. The study aimed at examining the issue of how the Dianet Gazette developed a speech in front of international issues around the Cyprus Peace Movement process and in this context the speech analysis method and the paper on Cyprus in the newspaper were studied. The result was that the Dianet Gazette followed a publication policy in the process of the Cyprus Peace Movement to arbitrate the government’s policy.

In Turkish thought, the way of thinking about the relations of religion and politics is shaped on the fact that these elements are brothers. In this way of thinking, religion supports politics and politics protects religion. Although these elements may look different in shape, religion and politics have been regarded as the same in terms of their basic purposes. This has been the case in the Republican era as well as in the Seljuk and Ottoman thought traditions. The Presidency of Religious Affairs, which was founded after the establishment of the Republic, supported the state around the aforementioned traditional way of thinking, and the state protected it and enabled it to continue its activities. Although the principle of secularism was added to the principles of the state, no changes were made to the Presidency of Religious Affairs, and this structure continued its existence as it was. Since its establishment, the Religious Affairs Department has undertaken the duty of conducting religious affairs, as well as the duty of educating, enlightening and raising public awareness.
