Büyük Atina Vebası Bir Pandemi miydi? Atina Salgınının Yayılımı Üzerine Bir Değerlendirme
2021
Journal:
Turkish Studies Historical Analysis
Author:
Abstract:

Was the Great Athens a Pandemic? An assessment of the spread of the Athens
2021
Author:
Abstract:

The epidemic, known as the Athens epidemic and having major and significant consequences in political, social, demographic and historical terms, has actually been influenced in a much wider geography than it appears, although it is mostly perceived as a regional disease. In the Greek and Roman world, epidemics were seen as religious catastrophes, very little subjected to the sources written by ancient writers, and most of the diseases were superficially recorded without proper diagnosis. Therefore, in both societies it is not possible to make a precise definition of diseases by following the records of ancient writers. However, approaching the possibility that the epidemics that occurred in different geographics may be part of a whole makes it possible to evaluate the spread of the epidemics from a wider perspective. Thus, it will be possible to clarify more clearly the destruction that the epidemic of Athens generated in the ancient world. In this study, our goal is to look closer to the epidemic of Athens, one of the most famous epidemic in history, to keep the light of where the epidemic could be spread before and after in the ancient world and whether it formed one of the first pandemic in history. In this context, the issue of the Athens epidemic, not named among the places by Thukydides, was opened to the debate whether Rome could also be linked to this epidemic, and then the possibility of this epidemic to be a "pandemic" was evaluated. The study, especially on the basis of Greek and Roman sources, traced the epidemic as different epidemics in the routes where the epidemic was followed and in ancient sources of importance in terms of Roman history, but not associated with the epidemic of Athens, and tried to approach the epidemic of Athens from a different perspective.

Was The Great Athenian Plague A Pandemic An Assessment Of The Athens Plague Spread
2021
Author:
Abstract:

Plague of Athens, an epidemic mostly perceived as a regional disease with great significance in political, social, demographic and historical consequences, is more effective in much wider geography than it appears. It was considered a religious disaster in Greece and Rome. It has been least discussed in historians' writings, and most of the diseases were written as superficial with no accurate diagnosis. Therefore, by the writings of historians, the exact diagnosis of the diseases is not possible. After all, by evaluating the epidemics that occurred in different areas, there is a significant chance to assess the epidemic by a broader perspective. It becomes possible to discuss the disaster caused by the Plague of Athens in the past times. We aim to bring light on history's most crucial plague; to discuss Athenian plague by closer perspective, overview its effect in the past and future, and makeup whether it was one of the world's first pandemics. In this study, it was discussed whether Rome, which is not mentioned in Thucydides' geographies in the origin's context of the epidemic could be linked to the epidemic and its possibility to be a "pandemic" was evaluated. In this study, the route followed by the epidemic based on Greek and Roman sources and the possibilities that were processed as different epidemics in previous sources, but not related, were evaluated, and the Plague of Athens was tried to be approached from a different perspective.
