Abstract:

This study deals with historical development of agricultural geography in Republic period of Türkiye. It evaluates agricultural geography studies in Türkiye by taking Anglo-American geography as reference. Revealing thematic, theoretical and methodological characteristics of studies conducted in agricultural geography and rural geography fields; methodologically the study departs from literature review and deploys doctoral dissertations as data prepared in last half century by human geographers. The main finding of study is that agricultural geography in Türkiye is trapped into descriptive regional approach focusing human and environment interaction in determinative sense and therefore it is underdeveloped compared to the counterparts in the Western world. The study suggests that if agricultural geography in Turkey aims to catch up its Anglo-American counterpart it should take multi-scaled social relations into consideration and it must has relational perspective which provides convergence of diverse economic geography approaches and makes it possible to put both macro and micro processes into research focus.
