Abstract:

In our country it is known that the practice of hunger after midnight and the duration of the surgery is long. It is believed that this condition increases the anxiety of patients in the pre- and postoperative process. The purpose is to examine the impact of the pre-operative hunger period on the level of anxiety before and after the surgery. Method Research is a forward-looking, cutting-edge and identifying type. The sample formed 86 patients planned for elective surgery at an university hospital's Orthopedic and Traumatological Clinic in August 2015-January 2016. Patients were divided into two groups (Group 1 < 8 hours; Group 2 ≥ 8 hours). The data was collected with the "Sosiodemographic and Clinical Characteristics Form" and the "Status and Continuous Anxiety Scale". In the analysis of the data, identifiable statistics, the t test and the quarter test were used. The findings found that the groups were similar in terms of sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. The group 1’s average hunger time was 7.34 ± 0.18, and the group 2’s 12.01 ± 2.10 hours. There was no statistically significant difference between the average scores of the Continuous Anxiety Score, the average scores of the Pre-operative and Postoperative Anxiety Score. The result was found that both groups experienced a mild pre-operative level of anxiety, but the hunger period did not affect the level of anxiety of patients.
