Abstract:

Turkish is one of the richest languages on the world for the number of relatives’ names it has. While there exist many words which denote relatives in Turkish, one word may express several relatives’ names in other languages. This shows both the richness of Turkish and the importance given to relatives’ relations. Turkish society has advanced and powerful relatives's relations. Through these relationships, solidarity, tolerance, cooperation and sharing of problems are targeted. Relatives’s relations are extended through marriage, adoption and other forms of relationship than blood relationship. There have been many publications and researches on relatives’ names in Turkish. We want to contribute to these publications having a look at and classifying the vocabulary from the Modern Turkish Dictionary. In this work the Turkish Dictionary which was published as the 11th printing by Turkish Language Institution in 2012 and the Modern Turkish Dictionary are investigated. A particular dictionary searching model has been used and names have been classified. We can find approximately 150 relatives’ names. These are classified as related to synonyms of relatives’ names, related to being elder, younger, related to sex, related to closeness of relation, related to oneself and foster parents, related to cultural closeness and traditions, related to men and women, related to the formation by father, mother and sibling, related to marital status, related to one word may express several relatives’ names, related to using with plural and singular meanings, related to structure of the relatives’ names, related to Turkish, foreign language and mixed language.
