Abstract:

The objective of this research is to study the field and pedagogical field knowledge of high school mathematician candidates related to the field of 8th-class school learning, using the "Matematical Knowledge for Teaching" (EMB) model developed by Ball, Thames and Phelps (2008). The UMB model shows the knowledge that teachers need to have for mathematics teaching. It is believed that the model may be used as a guide in mathematical teaching and therefore may contribute to the teaching process. The research is carried out using a specific case study pattern, which is one of the research methods of quality. The research participants are formed by three final class high school math teacher candidates who study at a state university in Turkey. The teachers who participated in the study were determined by the standard sample method. First of all, each teacher candidate was discussed on the components of the UMB model. Then the teaching processes of the teacher candidates were observed and recorded with a video camera. After the completion of the teaching process, a general meeting with the teachers candidates was held. The results of the study showed that teaching candidates had a lack of knowledge in the field and pedagogical fields related to the field of learning. It has been found that the deficiencies of teaching candidates are focused especially on the knowledge components of the field of expertise.
