Abstract:

Enver Pasha, one of the most important figures of our recent history, is one of the most controversial statesmen in terms of his military identity, the ideals he wanted to realize, his successes and failures. According to some, Enver Pasha was the key figure of the Young Turk Movement, the hero of liberty in the people's memory, the most powerful leader of the Union and Progress Party, and the patriotic and successful figure of the Tripoli and Balkan wars. For others, he is defined as a German-admiring adventurer who unnecessarily dragged the Ottoman Empire into World War I and played an active role in the disintegration of the state. Within the scope of this study, Enver Pasha's life story full of ups and downs will be discussed within the frame work of his political and military life. Then, Enver Pasha's reform activities for the modernization of the army after he became the Minister of War will be analysed by focusing on his work with the Sanders Mission, his purges in the army, and his work on the alphabet and writing, also known as the army alphabet.
