In this article we analyze the trajectories and experiences of cultural workers in socially oriented cultural policies in Uruguay and Argentina. These are policies that operate under increasingly widespread paradigms of cultural rights, inclusion and transformation, oriented to socially excluded populations. The analysis reveals socio-cultural policies in their everyday framework, allows for the identification of tensions rarely included in official documents, while contributing to the emerging field of studies on cultural and artistic works. Fifty in-depth interviews, participant observations in work spaces, document analysis and a survey were conducted. Among the main findings, we highlight the incidence of the 2001-2002 socioeconomic crisis in the specific configuration of a generation of workers; the strong prevalence of categories such as "vocation" and "commitment" not only among workers but also in the recruitment criteria used by the institutions that carry out socio-cultural policies. In turn, the overlapping of meanings between work and social activism can be linked to insecure and unstable working conditions, in the framework of programs and institutions that carry out cultural policies of fragile projection, low hierarchy and low resources.
