HistorioRraphy, which has now become a field of scholarly study, was formerly an effort to merely reRister current events and inform the cominR Renerations throuRh the chronides handed down. Especially durinR the efforts of colonization in Ancient Greece, there were people called "logographos". who travelled to the newly obtained lands and who made speeches about the lands visited to the fellow countrymen in public areas on their return home. The speeches by them were called "IOROS" delivered and were about the history, ReoRraphy and ethnoRraphy of the land, throuRh which they travelled. The forerunners of "loRoRraphoi", amonR whom were Hecataeus of Miletus, Xanthus the Lydian, Hellanicus of Lesbos, Scylax of Caryanda, Charon of Lampsacus and Dionysius of Miletus, were mainly from the Western Anatolian coast. AlthouRh quite a larRe number of works have been attributed to Charon of Lampsacus, only the fraRments from Ho ro i (Anna ls/Chron icles) and Persika (Persica/CrecoPersian Wars) have manaRed to find their way to the present day. The fraRments reveal that the author has avoided RettinR into too much detai!, decoratinR his work throuRh employinR mytholoRical stories and lenRthy statements and that he has preferred an archaic manner ofwritinR.
