Abstract:

In the context of the theory of alternative media diversity and relativity, it is theoretized by the concept of service to the community, being an alternative to the main stream, its relationship with civil society and the concept of rizom. Based on the alternative media theory created by Bailey and others, this study evaluates the relationship of alternative media with civil society. The different meanings of the concept of civil society in the historical process are defined by the meaning of civil society today and its importance for democracy. By exposing the mutual relationship of alternative media with the concept of civil society, the characteristics and functions of alternative media in the formation and development of democracy are assessed. Alternative media is seen as an element within the civil society. The alternative media within the civil society field must also have the characteristics that this field possesses, such as multiplicity, participation and transparency, these characteristics also exist as characteristics identified with the civil society field. In the study, Gramsci and Habermas have linked the theories of civil society with the alternative media concept. In this context, it is taken into account the result that alternative media serves as a part of civil society and develops it, has an important role in democratic progress, and that can also occur in an important relationship with the civil society.
