Abstract:

Evaluation of the availability of video platforms: YouTube and Dailymotion
2022
Author:
Abstract:

Video platforms are an important resource for the integration of visual and hearing stimulators into learning environments. Obtaining users' opinions about the availability of two of the video platforms that can sometimes be used as an educational tool and sometimes a entertainment tool has been the starting point of this study. Thus, this study aims to assess the availability of YouTube and Dailymotion by participants with different demographic characteristics in terms of gender, age, educational status, internet use time, used vehicle and frequency factors. In this study, the data was obtained from 217 participants and the availability levels of video platforms were determined through the System Availability Scale. This scale is also added to sections where participants can provide demographic information and their views on YouTube and Dailymotion video platforms. Thus (1) the availability level of video platforms was measured, (2) the differentiation of availability perceptions according to the demographic characteristics of participants was questioned, and (3) the focus was on better understanding the views of participants on the availability of video platforms. In the analysis of qualitative data, ANOVA and the analysis of qualitative data, the content analysis method has been applied. Research finds that participants in the study group found the availability level of the YouTube platform high while the Dailymotion platform found the availability level low. In this study, where the status of differentiation of the availability level according to demographic characteristics was questioned, the opinions of users on availability were also analyzed. Thus, it can be said that the findings and recommendations presented in the research could contribute to researchers and system developers for future studies.

Abstract:

Video platforms are an important resource for integrating visual and auditory stimuli into learning environments. The starting point of this research is to get the opinions of users on the usability of two of the most common video platforms, which can sometimes be used as an educational tool and sometimes as an entertainment tool. Thus, this research aims to evaluate the usability level of YouTube and Dailymotion by participants with different demographic characteristics in terms of gender, age, education level, duration of internet use, tools used, and frequency of visits. This research has been designed in a mixed-method approach, data were obtained from 217 participants and the usability levels of video platforms were determined through the System Usability Scale. By placing additional questions on the scale, participants could express their demographic information and their views on YouTube and Dailymotion video platforms. Thus, (1) the usability level of the video platforms was measured, (2) the differentiation status of the usability perceptions according to the demographic characteristics of the participants was questioned, and (3) the focus was on better understanding the participants' views on the usability of the video platforms. ANOVA was used in the analysis of quantitative data and the content analysis method was used in the analysis of qualitative data. Research findings have shown that while the participants in the study group found the usability level of the YouTube platform high, they found the usability level of the Dailymotion platform low. In this research, in which the differentiation status of the usability level according to the demographic characteristics was questioned, the opinions of the users on the usability were also analyzed. Thus, it can be said that the findings and suggestions presented in this research can contribute to researchers and system developers for future studies.
