Türkçede fiil konusu tüm gramerlerde ele alınan temel kategorilerdendir. Gramer çalışmalarında fiiller yapılarına, nesne ile ilgili durumlarına, hareketin oluşumuna göre sınıflandırmalar yapılmış; anlamsal bir sınıflandırma yapıldığı takdirde sadece olumlu, olumsuz ve soru şekilleri ele alınmıştır. Genelde fiilin fiziksel hareketinin temel alındığı zihinsel hareketliliğin göz ardı edildiği ve anlamsal yönden sınıflandırmanın da çok kısıtlı bir şekilde yapıldığı dikkati çekmektedir. Dolayısıyla mental fiiller önem arz eden ve önü açık bir konuyu teşkil etmektedir.
