Abstract:

The rapid population growth, industrialization, unplanned urbanization, unconscious consumption of natural resources and the negative effects of climate change are a global threat today. These threats bring sociological, economic, administrative and ecological problems as well. In this context, in the planning work aimed at improving the quality of urban life and ecology in urban areas, the possibilities of preserving biological diversity have been discussed and new systems have been introduced. The green building certification systems, which have been in the forefront in the construction sector in recent years, are green building, environmentally friendly buildings, sustainable cities, etc. It has been supported by governments and civil organizations to enhance the implementation of the concepts and policies in this regard have been developed. Green certification systems are classified in the structure scale as well as in the neighborhood, landscape, city scale. These certification systems, in addition to the sustainability practices of urban areas, are directed to applications such as rainwater management in the project, thermal island impact reduction, green roof, local plant use in landscape areas. Sustainable landscape certificates, along with the development and management of landscape areas, aim to preserve natural resources, field components, protection, management, restoration and create efficient ecosystems. Thus, the sustainability of biological diversity in urban areas, the implementation of protective approaches, the urban landscape planning will be in accordance with certain standards, and measures against habitat disintegration will be taken. This study discussed how green building certification systems that are widely used worldwide adapt to the urban scale and the potential to support biodiversity in urban areas.
