Abstract:

In all relationships established between two parties, such as individual-individual, individual-society, and society-society, language is a narrative instrument that facilitates the transfer of feelings and concepts. There needs to be a shared language between the addressor and the recipient for this explanation to make sense. A necessity of this kind essentially leads to the learning or teaching of languages. The purpose of this article is to compare the content of A Turkish Manual: Comprising A Condensed Grammar With Idiomatic Phrases, Exercises, And Dialogues, And Vocabulary, a textbook written by Mackenzie in the 19th century to teach Turkish for military purposes, with other Turkish language grammars published in English during the same time (Davids, 1832; Boyd, 1842; Barker, 1854a; Barker, 1854b; Abu Said, 1877; Arnold, 1877; Hopkins, 1877; Wells, 1880; Redhouse, 1884; Tarring, 1886). The paper will evaluate this work within its own period by analyzing the common, similar and different aspects of A Turkish Manual and other grammars.
