Kıbrıs, Doğu Akdeniz’in ortasında Türkiye, Mısır, Suriye, İsrail ve Yunanistan’la çevrelenmiş çok önemli bir odak noktasında, tarih boyunca büyük stratejik öneme haiz olmuş büyük bir adadır. 21.yüzyılın ilk on yıllarını kapsayan dönem içerisinde dünyayı saran petrol savaşları dolayısıyla söz konusu ticari metanın erişim yollarının ortasında bulunan Kıbrıs Adası’nın sadece stratejik önemi artmamış ada açıklarında keşfedilen yeni ve zengin, doğal gaz ve petrol yatakları dolayısıyla bölge yeni bir uluslararası gerilim için çok boyutlu bir aday haline gelmiştir. Kıbrıs’ın gelecek on yıllar boyunca büyük bir ekonomik, sosyal, siyasal, ticari ve ekonomik inkişafın ve dinamizmin odak noktası olarak yükseleceği artık kesinlik arz eden bir durumdur. Gelecekteki bu ticari, siyasi ve sosyal yükselişin hangi şekilde tecelli edeceği hakkında geniş görüşlülük sahibi olmak için bölgenin önceki yüzyıllarda yükselen merkezlerinin serüvenlerini ayrıntılı bir şekilde incelemekte fayda vardır. Bu anlamda İngiliz tarihçi ve yazar Philip Mansel’in Türkçe’ye kazandırılan “Levant: Akdeniz’de İhtişam ve Felaketler” kitabının son derecede ayrıntılı ve nitelikli, sosyolojik ve siyasal analizlerle bölgeyi derinlemesine incelediğini görmekteyiz. Levant kitabı doğrudan doğruya Kıbrıs’ı ele alan bir inceleme kitabıdır. Kıbrıs’ı çevreleyen büyük Levant kentlerinin yükseliş ve düşüşünü ufuk açıcı bir şekilde sosyolojik tarih ve şehircilik açısından ele almıştır. Doğu Akdeniz’de geçmişte neler olduğunu anlatarak gelecekte neler olacağına dair de önemli fikirler vermektedir.
Cyprus is alarge in the middle of the eastern Mediterranean surrounded by Turkey, Egypt, Syria, Israel and Greece, at a very important focal point, which has been of great strategic importance throughout history. 21.covering the first decade of the century that has swept the world the during the period of the oil wars, hence located in the middle of the accress road of commercial goods in question, the strategic importance of the island of Cyprus are not increased; discovered off the coast of the island of new and rich, multidimensional natural gas and oil deposits in the region has thus become a candidate for a new international tension. Cyprus will rise as the focal point of great economic, social, political, commercial and economic development and dynamism in the coming decades. In order to have a vision of how this future commercial, political and social rise will be manifested, it is useful to examine the adventures of the rising centers of the region in the previous centuries in detail. In this sense, we see that the book “Levant: Splendor and Disasters in the Mediterranean” by the British historian and writer Philip Mansel, brought to Turkish, examines the region in depth with extremely detailed and qualified, sociological and political analysis. The book of the Levant is a review book that deals directly with Cyprus. He has dealt with the rise and fall of the great Levant cities surrounding Cyprus in a seminal way from the point of view of sociological history and urbanism. By telling what has happened in the past in the Eastern Mediterranean, it also gives important ideas about what will happen in the future.
