Introduction and Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of ultrasound neck examination and the rates of complications associated with PDT in making a surgical tracheostomy or PDT decision. Method and Requirements: 72 patients were included in this retrospective study between 2015 and 2017. All the data were obtained by scanning from the electronic database in the Reactive Education and Research Hospital. The US has been used to determine the location of the crikoid scratches, trakea rings, thyroid and vascular structures. After a neck examination with the U.S. the unsuitable circumstances were determined by the surgical tracheostomy. In the last two years, 72 patients were sent to tracheostomy. After the ultrasound neck examination, 13 patients (18%) were subjected to surgical tracheostomy. Four patients were diagnosed with vascular structures, 7 patients with difficulties in detection of the trakeal ring, and 2 patients with large thyroid tissue due to a surgical trakeostomy. PROTECTION and RESULT: Ultrasound provides information about the anatomy of the neck area, including vascular structures. The ultrasound examination of the neck is effective in reducing complications and determining percutaneous dilatational trakeostomy that may be difficult to perform.
