When the importance of central role of cinema in construction of popular perception taken into regard, understanding the basic tenets of religious consciousness in the modern world requires one to research cinema’s effetcs on religious perception of the masses. Cinema provides a basic environment for both constructing religious elements by taking popular culture as a starting point and at the same time re-constructing religious perception in the popular culture in new ways. The other important dimension that is inherent in the nature of cinema is the fact that it accommodates a socialization process within itself. In this regard, Hollywood films does not only produce some perception patterns and images but also produce new subjectivity patterns and subjects. This situation constructs the basic relationship between cinema and popular culture. This article consists of three main sections. The first one dwells upon the relationship between cinema, popular culture and the modern perception. In this context, in turn, the second and the third section consist of the following themes. After examining the tradition of apocalyptic tradition in the Christianity and its function in the modern times, as an example of how this tradition re-produced in the relationship between modernity, religion and popular culture, the cinema films of Twelve Monkeys and Apocalypse Now are evaluated as the paradigmatic examples of this process. In order to explain this relationship, rather than taking some extra-ground to criticize these films, methodologically it is followed the way of regarding the religious codes used in these films as what they refer to in Christian tradition and to what extent they have been changed in these films. As a result it is not exaggeration to claim that, in generally, the context of whole modern time-space functioning, specially the cinema films, contains basic religious symbols as to the extent that these symbols are emptied from their divine content and thus degenerated.
