Myths as commonly recognized as ancient tales about imaginary stories are more than what meets the eye. If we dive into the world of myths, we see that it turns out to be a mirror reflecting the world and societies we live in. The comparative mythologist Joseph Campbell is pretty much interested in mythology, and he dedicated his life and work to comprehensively understanding the meaning and symbols found in mythological tales as well as folk tales and legends. He came up with his own theory called ‘monomyth’ which is about a hero’s journey as he mentions in his well-known book The Hero with a Thousand Faces. As a work of comparative mythology, the book details the idea that there is one great journey and many heroes who undergo the somewhat same path to fulfil their destinies regardless of time and space they are in. This paper unpacks the theory of monomyth, comparing the films called Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049 the famous science-fiction sequel, foregrounding the vital role of myths in shaping human lives.
