Abstract:

The waters are ecosystems with a range of common characteristics that combine a wide variety of land, coastal and marine habitats, and the preservation, management and transfer of these resources to future generations is of great importance. However, in the conservation and sustainable use of waters, the traditional ecological information (GEB) is often ignored. This study was carried out with the aim of determining the role of GEB in the protection and sustainable use of the watery area. The study was carried out in the Redmak Delta Water Area, which is one of Turkey's most important waters and is listed in the UNESCO Natural Heritage List. In this study, the method of ethnography (ethnography) was used from the methods of qualitative research. The method of ethnography aims to qualitative results by analyzing the social life process, behavior forms, relationships and code systematism related to the human community. The data was collected with the help of non-compatible observations and semi-configured conversation forms, and the visual analysis technique was used in the analysis of data. In the framework of the method, the examples of the GEB in the Deltas Water Area were evaluated and seven topics on the protection of the water area were determined. The findings show that traditional practices and rituals, which are part of the GEB, indirectly contributed to the remaining of the Red Devil Water Area as a natural unit from the past to the present and guided the resource in the water area to be smartly used by the local people. As a result, the GEB examples in the Red Devil Water Area contain practical information that can contribute by integrating them with modern protective approaches, especially in the protection of the water area and in sustainable use.
