Objective: Nutrition is the most important element in healthy growth and development, especially for the first age. The study aimed at determining how long mothers only fed their babies with breast milk, when they started supplementary nutrition, and the factors affecting their decisions on the transition to supplementary nutrition. Tools and methods: The study included a total of 300 facts traced in Social Pediatrics, General Pediatrics and other clinics at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ege between 12-36 months. After receiving the written approval form, the mother and mother were filled with a single and face-to-face interviewed survey form. The study included a total of 300 children, including 174 (58 percent) men and 126 (42 percent) girls. The average age of the cases was 22.5 ± 7.8 months. The study included 293 (97.7%) babies who received breast milk within the first 24 hours after birth, but the starting rate with breast milk alone was 78.3% (n=235). The average time of nutrition with only breast milk was 4±2,5 months. In the first six months, the rate of breast milk only was 47.7%. While mothers tend to give breast milk during the first 24 hours, the only breast milk rate was not sufficient. In addition to mother’s milk, formula foods were also given at a high level. The total breastfeeding period was 14 ± 7.8 months, the average age for starting supplementary nutrition was 5.6 ± 1.2 months, and 29.3 per cent of women started supplementary nutrition before the 6th month. When asked the mothers why they started supplementary nutrition before the 6th month, the most common answer was "for breastfeeding" (37.5%) The result: Our study has shown that mothers are willing to breast milk but try different forms of nutrition due to various factors. It is also found that the rate of transition to early-started supplementary diet is higher than the average in Turkey and there are deficiencies related to the transition to appropriate supplementary diet in the right time. To continue mother education before and after childbirth, it is necessary to increase the level of knowledge of mothers about nutrition.
