Abstract:

The American Board missionary Henry Otis Dwight (1843-1917) published a work in 1893 on the rights of American missionaries who served in the Ottoman State derived from the treaties. This study is about Henry Otis Dwight and the Treaty Rights of American Missionaries in Turkey. Henry Otis Dwight, born in Istanbul as a board missionary and writer's mother and father's son, has been missionary in the Ottoman for twenty-nine years. During this process, he was involved in the Board’s broadcasting department, thanks to his very good degree of Turkish for many years he has worked with the correction of the Turkish-English Redhouse Dictionary, and has been representative of the missions in all relations with the Ottoman government. During the 1877-1878 Ottoman-Russian War and during the 1894-1896 Armenian rebellion he was a missionary who trusted in the intelligence and talents of the American Board. Appointed to priesthood in 1880, the title of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) in 1896 from the Amherst College has taken. Henry Otis Dwight has worked for Board for many years, knowing the operation of the Ottoman State very closely and well. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to look at the details of the rights of American missionaries in the Ottoman State from the point of view of a Board missionary to contribute to the understanding of American missionary activities in the Ottoman State.
