Abstract:

The 1897 Ottoman-Greek War came out because of the Greeks' invasion of the Grit Island in the way of achieving the Megalo Idea and their attacks on the Ottoman borders. The Greek rulers, who thought they were superior to the Ottoman, were quite sure they would win the war, but the war did not go as they expected; in short time the Turkish soldiers opened the way to Athens. At this time, the Greeks the major states, including Russia, to make the beginning of the negotiations between the Ottoman State and Greece. In the war, the Ottoman army was composed of volunteer soldiers, except the Nazamian, Redif and Mustahfish classes. In addition to the Muslims, the Muslims also appealed to be a volunteer soldier. Volunteer records are from every section of the age to the age that can be called children. The candidates resulted positively, the volunteers to the specified places, the fronts, were welcomed with enthusiastic ceremonies in which the people participated, with the pride that the victory was given, the return of the soldiers took place in the same way. Volunteer soldiers and their families left behind were also provided cash, food and clothing by local authorities and the advanced leaders of the region with a good economic situation. The successes of the Ottoman State on the fronts, like the military classes, have a contribution of volunteers. The success and loyalty demonstrated by volunteer soldiers on the fronts made them honoured by the "Greek War Medal" which was made only for this battle. Therefore, in the research; during the 1897 Ottoman-Greek War, the registration of the Ottoman volunteer soldiers, the registration of those who were accepted, the shipments and returns to the fronts were studied.
