Abstract:

Social media applications, which are among the online communication channels that have become widespread with the Internet technology, are platforms managed centrally by technology companies. The decentralized governance approach, which has become widespread with blockchain technology, also finds application areas in social media communication. The aim of this research is to understand the working principles of the new generation decentralized social media applications that emerged with the use of blockchain technology, which is one of the relatively new technologies, and to discuss the social and economic paradigm change brought to social media communication. It is important to understand the potential positive and negative effects for users, as well as the technical working principles of the new generation decentralized social media communication platforms, which are rapidly growing and becoming widespread in terms of user numbers. In this research, a discussion on data ownership, creator economy and user experience is presented through the data compiled through document analysis, and a case study. This interdisciplinary research, which reveals the advantages and disadvantages of decentralized social media applications, provides benefits with its contribution to the literature and opens up new questions for different researches in the future.
