Mitoloji, eski toplumların doğaya, insan ilişkilerine, tarihsel olaylara ve dine dair inanış ve düşünüşlerini içeren söylemsel bir pratik olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Her kültürün ve ulusun kendi efsaneleri, tanrıları, kahramanları, canavarları ve mucizeleri mitolojik anlatılarda yer almaktadır. İnsanın kendi varlığını ve dünyayı anlamlandırmasında yol gösterici olma niteliği taşıyan bu mitolojik anlatılar edebiyat, resim, tiyatro, heykel, müzik ve sinema gibi alanlarda yeniden üretilerek günümüze kadar varlığını sürdürmüştür. Mitolojiyi ilham kaynağı olarak sıklıkla kullanan sinemada genel eğilim, mitolojik öyküyü birebir uyarlayarak epik-fantastik film türü içinde sunmaktır. Bunun yanı sıra mitolojiye modern yorum getirme çabası taşıyan anlatılar da bulunmaktadır. Ancak mitolojiyi referans alırken hangi yöntem tercih edilirse edilsin, mitolojik metnin iyi/kötü, doğru/yanlış, adalet ve ahlak gibi kavramlar hakkındaki ideolojik alt-metinleri değişmemektedir. Çalışmada amaçlanan; sinemada mitolojinin modern yorumları ve mitolojik metin arasındaki ilişkiyi sadakat ve farklılık bağlamında inceleyerek, yeniden yorumlamanın ideolojik ve kültürel göndermelerini ortaya koymaktır. Bu doğrultuda Nerdesin Be Birader? (2000, yön. Joel&Ethan Coen) ve Kutsal Geyiğin Ölümü (2017, yön. Yorgos Lanthimos) filmleri ele alınmıştır.
Mythology is defined as a speech practice that includes beliefs and thoughts of ancient societies about nature, human relations, historical events and religion. The legends, the gods, the heroes, the monsters and the miracles of each culture and nation are included in the mythological stories. These mythological stories, which have the character of being a guide in the human existence and understanding of the world, have been re-produced in the fields such as literature, painting, theatre, sculpture, music and cinema and have continued to exist until today. The general tendency in the cinema, which often uses mythology as a source of inspiration, is to present the mythological story in an epic-fantastic film type by adapting one to another. In addition to this, there are also stories that try to bring modern mythology to comment. But no matter what method is preferred when referring to mythology, the mythological subtext on concepts such as good/bad, right/bad, justice and morality does not change. The aim of the study is to examine the relationship between the modern interpretations of the mythology in the cinema and the mythological text in the context of loyalty and diversity, and to reveal the ideological and cultural transmissions of reinterpretation. Mythology is defined as a discursive practice which involves the beliefs and thoughts of ancient societies on nature, human relations, historical events and religion. Each culture and nation has its own myths, gods, heroes, monsters, and miracles in mythological narratives. These mythological narratives, which are the guiding lights of man's own existence and the meaning of the world, are reproduced in the fields of literature, painting, theater, sculpture, music and cinema and continue to survive until today. The general trend in cinema, which often uses mythology as an inspiration source, is to adapt the mythological story and present it in an epic-fantasy film genre. Furthermore, there are various forms of narratives which pave the way to creating modern interpretation of mythology. Nonetheless, even though the preferred methods of using mythological references vary, the ideological subtexts of the mythological texts which hold concepts such as good/bad, right/wrong, justice and morality at their core remain the same. The object of this study is to analyse the relationship between the modern interpretations of mythology in cinema and the mythological text in relation to the concepts of loyalty and difference in order to reveal the ideological and cultural implications of reinterpretation. Within this frame, the movies O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000, Joel & Ethan Coen) and The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017, Yorgos Lanthimos) are explored as case studies. Despite the fact that the movies in question are different in terms of style, atmosphere and story, both movies manifest common points in terms of ideological associations.
