Abstract:

Wastes are among the most significant problems encountered in the modern world. Considering the harmful effects of wastes on the environment and human life, the necessity of waste management becomes even clearer. Nonetheless, waste management is a complicated process that involves several different operations and concerns multiple stakeholders. Thus, for facilities to be able to achieve successful waste management, it is first needed to reveal the critical success factors in waste management. The purpose of this study, which starts with this consideration, is to determine the critical success factors that are required for successful waste management at facilities and investigate the relationships among these factors using the DEMATEL method. In the study, nine critical success factors are determined by utilizing expert opinions. A survey that includes these nine factors is applied with 13 managers working at different firms, and the DEMATEL method is used to identify the causality relationships among these factors. According to the results of the study, the effective factors are found as upper management support, training, sensitivity/awareness, regulations, budget, and participation of the stakeholders. The affected factors are determined as the participation of the employees, the waste management system, and waste management technologies.
