Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the factors affecting violence within the family and women’s some characteristics relation with violence. Method: The study was conducted between 01 March – 30 April 2005, in Aydın province center, as a descriptive cross-sectional study with 291 women who were chosen by improbable sampling method. Findings: In their married lives 27.8% of the women had experienced some kind of violence, 23% emotional, 14.4% physical and 9.2% sexual violence. The women who had experienced significant problems in their lives recently Odds Ratio OR =2.799; 95% Confidence Interval CI =1.063-7.370 , whose husband used alcohol OR=3.548; 95% CI=1.488-8.460 , and whose husband had a habit of going to the neighborhood coffeehouse OR=2.506; 95%CI=1.146-5.478 , were dissatisfied with marriage OR=5.334; 95%CI=1.218-23.336 and had had a recent marital problem OR=3.454; 95%CI=1.175-10.149 were more likely to have experienced some kind of domestic violence. Women who did not enjoy doing things together with their husbands OR=3,188; %95 CI=1,299-7,822 , who were not satisfied with their marital lives OR=4.607; 95%CI=1.132-18.746 and who had experienced recent problems with their marriage OR=3.755; 95% CI=1.259-11.195 had increased possibility of facing emotional domestic violence. Women’s health OR=5.613; 95% CI=1.453-21.684 , whose husbands made a habit of going to the neighborhood coffeehouse OR=7.434; 95%CI=2.133- 25.915 and who were not satisfied with their marital lives OR=12.270; 95% CI=1.758-85.630 had a statistically significantly increased possibility of facing physical domestic violence. Also those who had experienced a significant life problem recently OR=19.679; 95% CI=1.684-229.990 had increased possibility of facing sexual violence. Conclusion: Experiencing a recent significant problem, having a husband who had a habit of going to the neighborhood coffeehouse and using alcohol, not being satisfied with marital life, experiencing a recent marital problem, and not enjoying doing things together with their husbands were risk factors for increasing the possibility that a woman would suffer domestic violence.
