Abstract:

Each member of the family has an influence on other family members. When the new member of the family in question has special needs, he can change the life cycles and perspectives of the parents and other members of the family. The aim of this research is to determine the perspectives of parents with special needs children on the idea of having a second child after their first child with special needs and to explain what parents expect from their siblings with typical development about their children with special needs. Phenomenology design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the research. Eleven parents with children with special needs and typical development participated in the study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the participants. The data obtained from the participants were analyzed with the Nvivo12 program. Six main themes emerged in the research: "Emotional Burnout", "Psychological Well-Being", "Expectations", "Communication Between Siblings", "Change in Quality of Life", and Suggestions to Families. Research findings show that while some of the parents experience emotional exhaustion, some of them are in psychological well-being. It is one of the important findings of the research findings that the expectation of parents from siblings with typical development is to own and protect their siblings. Parents stated that communication between siblings is no different from their own sibling relationships. Parents' job quitting and city change situations are discussed. Participating parents offered suggestions to other parents. As a result of the research, it is stated that families with children with special needs need psychological support services in order to spend quality time with both of their children.
